Ruminate Magazine Short Story contest -- Deadline Oct. 15
September 24, 2011RUMINATE Magazine is currently accepting entries for the 2012 William Van Dyke Short Story Prize. $1000 will be awarded to the winner and publication in the Spring 2012 Issue will be awarded to both the winning and runner-up stories. The winning story from the 2011 contest, selected by author Leif Enger, appears in Issue 19 of Ruminate. 2009's winning story, selected by author Bret Lott, was awarded a notable mention in the Best American Short Stories anthology.

Sue Sorensen's First Novel Released!
August 15, 2011Sue Sorensen, a professor of English at Canadian Mennonite University, has released her first novel, A Large Harmonium.
The novel is a comedy spanning one year in the life of Janey, an English Literature academic dealing with career, motherhood, friends, faith and family. The story is humourous while also subtly approaching the comical and sometimes sobering frustrations Janey faces in every aspect of her life.
A Large Harmonium is available from Coteau Books.

July 20, 2011Back to Berlin, a one-man play written and performed by Vern Thiessen and directed by Geoffrey Brumlik, has extended its run at the Drilling Company Theater through the end of July.

"A parable of redemption" - Annie Proulx reviews Miriam Toews' Irma Voth
June 14, 2011Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annie Proulx recently reviewed Miriam Toews' latest novel, Irma Voth, for the Financial Times. Proulx calls Irma Voth a "strong and skillful novel," and closes her review with a reflection on Irma Voth as "a parable of redemption, a powerful and favourite theme in literature since the New Testament, traceable through thousands of literary works that leave the reader with a comforting glow of hope."

Mennonites Don't Dance Shortlisted for Danuta Gleed Award
May 24, 2011Darcie Friesen Hossack's Mennonites Don't Dance, released last fall by Thistledown Press, has been shortlisted for the Danuta Gleed Literary Award.
The winner will be announced May 28th in Toronto at the Writers' Union AGM.
