Di Brandt chosen as Writer-in-Residence
September 28, 2014Di Brandt, an admired Canadian poet, essayist, and literary critic, was selected as the Winnipeg Public Library's Writer-in-Residence for 2014-2015.
Beginning this October and continuing until April 2015, she will work with the public through workshops and individual consultations. In addition, she will continue to concentrate on her own writing. The Writer-in-Residence program is designed to provide new, emerging, and established writers with a chance to recieve feedback on their manuscripts.

Evie Yoder Miller publishes new novel
June 18, 2014Evie Miller Yoder, author of Eyes at the Window, recently published her second novel, Everyday Mercies.
The novel tells the story of Carrie, whose proposition to grow organic vegetables clashes with her dairy-farming father's ideas about working the land. Miller Yoder takes a lively look at the tension and humor of family life, focusing on everyday interactions between four generations of Mennonite women.

Samatar wins award for best new writer
June 18, 2014Sofia Samatar, from California, received the John W. Campbell award for Best New Science Fiction or Fantasy Writer at the World Science Fiction Convention.
Samatar was awarded this honor for her debut novel--A Stranger in Olondria, published by Small Beer Press in 2013--and her short stories that have been published in a variety of magazines and books.
A Stranger in Olondria follows Jevick, a pepper merchant's son, on his ghost-riddled adventure to the distant land of Olondria. The critically acclaimed novel was thirteen years in the making.

Maurice Mierau's adoption memoir

April 27, 2014Random House of Canada will be releasing Rudy Wiebe's newest novel, Come Back, on September 30, 2014.
The book tells the story of Hal Wiens, a retired professor who mourns the death of his wife. One day, he catches sight of his beloved son, Gabriel--who died 25 years earlier. The sighting sets off a series of events in the quest to unravel the mystery of Gabrial's death.

Dora Dueck wins novella award

Dora Dueck, from Winnipeg, Manitoba, won The Malahat Review's 2014 Novella Prize with her story "Mask." Chosen from among 221 submissions, "Mask" will be published in the Summer 2014 issue of The Malahat Review.The contest's judges said that Dueck's piece "is a deftly written, deeply affecting account of the physical and psychological ramifications within one family struggling to live with the wounds inflicted by war.
