Maurice Mierau's adoption memoir
May 27, 2014In September, Freehand Books will release Maurice Mierau's Detachment: An Adoption Memoir. The book explores what happens after the adoption papers are signed, focusing on the author's own experience of adopting two sons from Ukraine.

Forthcoming novel by Rudy Wiebe
April 27, 2014Random House of Canada will be releasing Rudy Wiebe's newest novel, Come Back, on September 30, 2014.
The book tells the story of Hal Wiens, a retired professor who mourns the death of his wife. One day, he catches sight of his beloved son, Gabriel--who died 25 years earlier. The sighting sets off a series of events in the quest to unravel the mystery of Gabrial's death.
Wiebe, an award-winning Canadian author, taught at Goshen College and the University of Alberta. He has written nearly ten novels, several collections, and a memoir.

Dora Dueck wins novella award
March 20, 2014
Dora Dueck, from Winnipeg, Manitoba, won The Malahat Review's 2014 Novella Prize with her story "Mask." Chosen from among 221 submissions, "Mask" will be published in the Summer 2014 issue of The Malahat Review.The contest's judges said that Dueck's piece "is a deftly written, deeply affecting account of the physical and psychological ramifications within one family struggling to live with the wounds inflicted by war. This is the work of an honest writer, who has handled sensational, painful material with insight and compassion."

We seek proposals that present new insights in ecological understandings ofmusic and sound. We are seeking contributions from as wide a range of contributors as possible, including creative writers, environmentalists, scientists, scholars, and musicians. We look forward to rich dialogue across a range of related disciplines, as we explore new ways for Mennonite people to relate to the environment.
We will explore ways of hearing the earth and listening to the environment. In the early 20th century, Mennonites paved the way for conscientious objector status in North America. Possibly in the 21st century, Mennonites can pave new, creative, sustainable ways to relate to the overwhelming environmental issues of our day. Sound in the Land is one vital venue for this. By bringing together musicians, environmentalists, scientists, theologians, and all manner of writers in fields of ‘creation care’ and ecomusicology, we will study sound from an environmentally ethical basis, consistent with long-standing Mennonite values.

New essay collection by Jeff Gundy
December 6, 2013Jeff Gundy's book of essays, Songs from an Empty Cage: Poetry, Mystery, Anabaptism, and Peace, was recently released by Cascadia Press.
Almost ten years in the making, this book's topics include everything from martyrdom and heresay to poetry and "theopoetics."
