Dora Dueck, from Winnipeg, Manitoba, won The Malahat Review's 2014 Novella Prize with her story "Mask." Chosen from among 221 submissions, "Mask" will be published in the Summer 2014 issue of The Malahat Review.
The contest's judges said that Dueck's piece "is a deftly written, deeply affecting account of the physical and psychological ramifications within one family struggling to live with the wounds inflicted by war. This is the work of an honest writer, who has handled sensational, painful material with insight and compassion."
Dora Dueck has authored two novels as well as a collection of short stories.
The Malahat Review's Novella Contest occurs every other year, and the deadline for the next Novella Prize is Feb. 1, 2016.
